River Tubing

Tubing is a great way to spend a day relaxing in the sun while keeping cool on Coldwater River. It can take several hours to float down the river, so preparation is key to making the most out of your day.

Rough "Schedule"

  1. You will need at least 2 cars and the items listed below.
  2. Meet at Subway gas station (http://goo.gl/maps/6A8Vp). This is the standard meeting spot as it's the last convenient place to buy food, drinks, ice, etc.
  3. Drive to Bob's Canoes Bob's Canoes (http://goo.gl/maps/0BG1s). Park on the grass slope on the right-hand side of the street just before the bridge. This is the end of the tubing line. Leave one car here so that you will be able to drive back to the top of the river for your other vehicle(s). I recommend leaving the keys with the car so you don't risk loosing them on the river. Any drivers that will need a ride back to their cars after tubing should leave a towel in the car being left at the bottom of the river.
  4. Drive to the top of the river (http://goo.gl/maps/13FL6). Get an initial coat of sunscreen on if you haven't already. Take only the bare essentials (items listed below) with you on the river and leave everything else in your car(s).
  5. Get on the river
  6. Get off the river at the bridge.

You may notice that the schedule above does not have any times associated with the events. Trying to plan a tubing trip to that degree is an exercise in futility. Generally if we leave the lab by  around 9:30am, we'll be on the river around 11am-11:30pm and off the river sometime after 4pm.

Stuff You'll Need

River Tips

  • Don't bring anything you aren't prepared to leave on the river.
  • Bring more sunscreen than you think you'll need.
  • Inflate your tube and check for leaks the night before.
  • If you're tubing on a Sunday, buy any alcohol the day before. It is illegal to sell alcohol in Santa Rosa county on Sundays (yes, really). It's legal now.
  • An average sized cooler will hold enough food, water, and alcohol for about 3 people. Make sure you know who your cooler buddies are.
  • Seriously, make sure you know which cooler you'll be putting your stuff in before the day of the trip.

FAQ

Q1: Can I rent a tube at Bob's?

A1: Yes. The cost is roughly $15 and they will drive you to the top of the river. If you rent a tube from Bob's you must ride with them to the start of the river.
